Jeff Powers, a founder of Bigelow Brewing Co. in Skowhegan who recently died at age 61, will be remembered at a memorial on Saturday.
Powers died suddenly on Sept. 19. No details or information about the cause of death were given in the company's Facebook announcement.
"Our Bigelow family is struggling to come to grips with the loss of such a compassionate, loyal, hardworking man,” the company said in its social media post. “He will be missed every day by his family and the Skowhegan community.”
Powers opened Bigelow with his wife, Pam Powers, at their Skowhegan farm in 2013. Jeff Powers started brewing as a hobby, but the pastime became a flourishing business that now distributes products to over 700 locations across the state.
"Jeff's spirit of generosity and kindness could be felt in everything he did,” Bigelow said in the post. “He always put others before himself, making sure that everyone was taken care of at Bigelow. His passion for serving his customers and community was unmatched. We appreciate your support during this difficult time as we mourn the loss of our friend, mentor, and leader Jeff."
Bigelow Brewing has planned to occupy the Spinning Mill in Skowhegan, which is now being converted for mixed use. Their hope was to have a brewing, canning and retail brewpub on the first floor.
The public is invited to attend a memorial for Powers from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the brewery, 473 Bigelow Hill Road in Skowhegan. The Bigelow Brewing staff and friends will be gathering together afterward to share stories of Powers.
Jeff was a truly incredible man. A leader in the community, a visionary businessman, and a tireless advocate for those close to him. He will be sorely missed. Let us all work hard to carry on his legacy.
