Rent-a-Husband owner Kaile Warren is speaking out against the fraud charges levied against him by the state, arguing that "these charges never should have been brought in the first place."
Warren, who last month pleaded not guilty to three charges of fraud in Cumberland County Superior Court, held a press conference at his home in Windham yesterday, saying he was "sick and tired of all the beating up that my brand has taken," according to the Portland Press Herald. He said he was "fighting back" against the charges of securities fraud, theft by deception and sales of unregistered securities, and he denied misleading investors about a major expansion in conjunction with Ace Hardware, a project he says is on hold.
Warren said he had no knowledge of doing anything illegal, citing the guidance of Portland law firm Preti Flaherty. "If there was anything that was done improperly, then I think we have to ask them why." A Preti Flaherty spokesman told the paper the law firm has not represented Warren for two years, but declined to comment further to avoid prejudicing the upcoming trial.
Warren owes more than $1.6 million to dozens of investors, according to the paper. A trial could happen as early as May 10.
