Maine lost 32 manufacturing companies in the last year, according to surveys by the industrial directory publisher Manufacturers' News Inc.
That translates to a loss of 945 manufacturing jobs in 2012 compared with the nearly 1,281 jobs lost during 2011, according to a press release.
The latest figures come from the company's regular surveys of manufacturing companies around the country.
Maine had 2,198 manufacturing companies employing 65,716 workers at the end of 2012. That's a drop of 32 manufacturers from 2011, when the company reported Maine had 2,230 manufacturers employing 66,627 workers.
Still, 2012 showed less drastic manufacturing job losses than 2011, when the company reported that Maine lost 1,281 manufacturing jobs and nearly 70 manufacturers.
The company reported that transportation equipment remains the largest manufacturing sector in the state, with paper product manufacturing ranking second.
While reporting net losses for manufacturing, the company noted the addition of Sea Hag Seafood in Tenants Harbor, the reopening of Great Northern Paper in East Millinocket and the expansion of Tambrands' Auburn plant as highlights for the state in 2012.
