Report: Maine tax system among the worst

A report from the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council says Maine has the sixth-worst tax system in the country for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Maine ranked 46 out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia for its tax system.

The council used 18 tax measures -- including income, capital gains, unemployment and property taxes -- to give each state and the District of Columbia a comprehensive score. It also ranked states by each tax measure. Maine fared best in wireless tax, ranking No. 11, and sales/gross receipts/excise taxes, ranking No. 17. It also ranked 26 for unemployment taxes. In all other categories it fell below the halfway mark.

A press release from the council cited Maine among a handful of states that has made recent policy changes to provide tax relief.

The state with the best tax system for small businesses and startups was South Dakota.
