Restaurant complaints rise 87% over 5 years

The number of restaurant complaints leading to inspections by state officials increased 87% over the last five years, according to an investigation by the Portland Press Herald.

In a broader investigation of state records, the paper found that 215 restaurant complaints led to inspections in 2012, compared with 115 in 2008.

In addition to rising complaints, the paper found that failure rates of state restaurants vary widely from county to county.

The highest inspection failure rate, of 10.9%, was noted in Cumberland County while Washington County had the lowest rate, at 0.3%.

State officials told the paper they do not analyze the inspection records by county and did not offer an explanation for why restaurant inspection failure rates vary so widely across the state.
