Retail sales still on the rise

Retail sales rose for the second month in a row, inching up in March more than 2% over last year.

Total taxable sales in March were $1.19 billion, a 2.2% increase over March 2009's $1.16 billion, according to the Maine State Planning Office. Building supply sales jumped 11.6% over last year, while general merchandise sales also saw a sizeable 7.4% increase. Auto and transportation sales, however, fell 8.7%, while lodging sales dropped a little more than 9%. Sales for the three months from January to March were 0.2% lower than the same period in 2009.

Retail sales were up 0.2% in February, marking the first year-over-year increase since July 2008.
