Richardson to still appear on primary ballot

Though Democratic hopeful John Richardson withdrew from the gubernatorial race in April, his name will still appear on the ballot and votes for him in tomorrow's primary will still be considered valid, according to the secretary of state.

Voters on June 8 will be able to cast votes for Richardson, the state's former commissioner of the Department of Economic and Community Development, even though he dropped out of the campaign April 26 after the state denied his request for Clean Election funds following allegations that campaign workers submitted falsified documents. Ballots had already been printed with Richardson's name, and Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap had previously said any votes cast for him would not be counted, according to the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. But, since Richardson's nomination papers were certified by the secretary of state, Dunlap acknowledged that legally the decision on his candidacy will be determined by the voters.

It's unclear what would happen if Richardson is declared the winner of the Democratic nomination. Democratic party leaders could call an emergency meeting in order to name a replacement candidate. "We'll burn that bridge when we're on the other side of it. Until then, we're going to work on what's right in front of us," Dunlap told MPBN.
