River group challenges casino permits

Opponents of a proposed casino in Oxford have challenged yet again the process by which permits were approved for the project.

The Androscoggin River Alliance, which raised a conflict of interest question connected to Darryl Brown when he was head of the Department of Environmental Protection, is now asking the Maine attorney general to weigh in on whether the project got preferential treatment, according to Maine Public Broadcasting Network. In February, the group said Brown's position as the top environmental officer for the state called into question the DEP's environmental assessment of permits for the casino project, which were submitted by Brown's firm, Main-Land Development Consultants. The action eventually led to Brown's departure as DEP commissioner.

Now an attorney for the alliance says proper procedures were not followed by the three DEP directors charged with reviewing the permit application. Steve Hinchman, an attorney for the Androscoggin River Alliance, says only one of the three directors followed protocol, which renders the permit invalid, and is asking for a review by the Attorney General's Office.
