Road warrior bragging rights: Maine outranks New England peers for driving

As a place to drive, Maine ranks among the top 20 in the United States and better than all five of its New England peers, according to a new barometer by personal finance website WalletHub.

The report, released Monday, puts Maine at No. 17 overall in a list that's led by Iowa (No. 1), Georgia (No. 2) and Ohio (No. 3).

WalletHub compared 50 states in terms of four key dimensions, including cost of ownership and maintenance; traffic and infrastructure; safety; and access to vehicles and maintenance.

Those were broken down further into 31 relevant metrics, each of which was assigned a grade on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the best for drivers. Researchers then calculated each state’s weighted average across all metrics to calculate its overall score and rank them in order.

While Maine was found to be 12th best for safety, it received a far lower mark (No. 36 overall) for access to vehicles and maintenance.

At No. 17 overall, Maine outshone all of its New England peers. Connecticut was the next highest in the region at No. 34, followed by Massachusetts (No. 36), Vermont (No. 38), New Hampshire (No. 43) and Rhode Island (No. 47).

And despite a No. 6 showing for safety, Hawaii was the last on the overall list, coming in at No. 50.
