The Portland area is getting another hotel, but this one won’t be downtown. The 122-room Element by Westin hotel is slated to open in 2022 at Rock Row, the sprawling mixed-use complex now under construction in Westbrook.

Element, an offshoot of the Westin chain owned by Marriott International Inc. (Nasdaq: MAR), includes over 40 international properties designed with a theme of nature and healthy living, according to a news release Thursday. Among its properties, Element has three hotels in eastern Massachusetts and one in Lebanon, N.H.

Josh Levy, principal of Rock Row’s developer, Waterstone Properties Group of Needham, Mass., believes the hotel brand is a good fit.

“We envision creating a world-class hotel that’s inspired by the outdoors and will offer vibrant, natural living and smart, fresh thinking," he said in the release. "It will reinforce the appeal and excitement of Rock Row.”

The five-story hotel will be surrounded by walking paths and green spaces, and will overlook Rock Row’s centerpiece, a 400-foot-wide, 300-foot-deep granite quarry and lake.

“We are excited to make an entrance into Greater Portland and be part of the Rock Row experience,” said Jared Schillinger, vice president of Brandt Hospitality Group, operators of the hotel. “The Element by Westin brand has a focus on livability and healthy living and will be very complementary to the balance of the Rock Row development."

The $600 million, multi-phase development covers 110 acres near the Portland city line, at Main Street and Larrabee Road. Waterstone purchased the former Pike Industries site in 2017, and has already opened a performance venue there, the Maine Savings Music Pavilion. A Market Basket supermarket is now under construction and expected to open in the spring.

Plans calls for Rock Row to also include a 12-screen Cinemark theater, an outdoor recreational retailer, a beer and food hall, and a variety of other retail, dining, entertainment and residential properties. Waterstone, which operates over 50 developments nationwide, said Rock Row will be the second-largest mixed-use complex in New England.
