Rockland co. plans $5M natural gas conversion

The Rockland-based FMC BioPolymer plans to convert to natural gas, a project that will cost an estimated $5 million.

The Bangor Daily News reported the company plans to install four 18,000-gallon tanks in Rockland that will receive trucked-in natural gas through an estimated two daily deliveries.

The paper reported that the company's plan still requires local and state approval, but local officials said that the planned conversion by one of the region's largest employers could renew discussions of extending natural gas pipelines in the midcoast.

FMC BioPolymer processes seaweed into carrageenan, which is used in products like toothpaste and ice cream, and is the last U.S.-based manufacturer of that product.
