Rockland eyes limiting cruise ships

Some Rockland business leaders are urging the city council not to approve a proposed fee increase and guidelines that would limit the number of cruise ships entering Rockland Harbor this summer.

The Harbor Management Commission presented recommendations to the council Wednesday, including one to limit cruise ship traffic to three megaships, 15 medium ships and 35 small ships annually, according to the Bangor Daily News. The panel also recommended the city impose a $600 fee for any cruise ship that restricts public access to parks or landings.

Those recommendations follow an earlier council vote to increase the fee per cruise ship passenger charged to the cruise lines from $1 to $6, sparking concern among some businesses that the city is fostering an unfriendly attitude to the cruise ship industry, reported the paper. The commission's recommendations were intended to limit the impact too many tourists could have on city services. Rockland expects about 33 cruise ships to visit its harbor this year.
