Rockland seafood processor closing

Oak Island Seafood, a scallop and shrimp producer in Rockland, is closing and laying off its 20 employees.

Plant manager Ken Trenholm attributed the closure of its 25,000-square-foot facility in the Rockland Industrial Park to "a horrible economy," according to the Rockland Herald Gazette. He said, though, that the company isn't going out of business but "moving on," but did not specify what its next move would be.

Oak Island Seafood was named Maine Exporter of the Year in 2007 by the Maine International Trade Center, and last year was pursuing a Community Development Block Grant of up to $100,000 to change its facility from scallop and shrimp processing to lobster and crab, but withdrew the application because it did not meet the grant requirement to offer employees wages of at least $34,000 annually, according to the paper.
