Rockland stitcher finds unique niche with antique sewing machines
Griffen Cooper’s Chainstitch Repair Co. in Rockland has a unique business niche: using antique sewing machines.
The PenBay Pilot reported that Cooper uses machines domestic and foreign dating back to 1900 and taught himself how to repair them, teaming up with a metal fabricator and machinist to alter parts to fit various machines.
Considering himself a commercial artist rather than a fine artist, he told the newspaper, “I do a lot of naturalist designs." Products include embroidered upholstery and soft goods, like boat and home cushions.
“My market is people who want something handmade and unique that is relatable to Americana,” and it’s complementary to many crafts, he said. Cooper has done some retail with local businesses, but markets almost exclusively through Instagram.
