Rockport seeks to lure entrepreneurs with new high-speed Internet program

The town of Rockport is seeking to lure entrepreneurs with a new high-speed Internet program that was made possible through a public-private partnership.

The Bangor Daily News reported that the new broadband Internet service was made possible by a partnership between the state, town and Maine Media Workshop, Internet provider GWI and Network Maine, a program by the University of Maine System seeking to increase access to high-speed Internet within the state.

The high-speed fiber optic connection — which is being sought by communities across the United States — will provide a connection speed of 1,000 megabits of data per second, 500 times faster than what was previously available in town.

Besides providing Maine Media students and local businesses with faster connections, the BDN noted that Rockport is hoping to use the new program as a way to lure entrepreneurs who would typically set up shop in large cities like Boston or New York.
