Two towns in western Maine have been chosen for a national pilot program to jumpstart the area's small businesses.
Fast Forward Restart, a national nonprofit group based in New Orleans, is planning to launch a two-year pilot recovery program in Mexico and Rumford that will help grow 30 small businesses, according to the Sun Journal. The organization, which formed after Hurricane Katrina, aims to help communities revive after a disaster, and has targeted areas such as Atlanta, Ga., and Livonia, Mich. Mike McClellan, the Maine director for Fast Forward Restart, said the area was suffering from a recession-related disaster, and was chosen for the program because of its high unemployment rate and recent tax hikes associated with the drop in value of large taxpayers such as NewPage Corp. and Brookfield Renewable Power.
McClellan and Linda Walbridge, Oxford County's economic development director, plan to meet with Rumford and Mexico selectmen to explain how the program works and who chooses the 30 participating businesses, according to the paper. The program is free for the two towns.
