The professions identified by the Maine Department of Labor as high-demand jobs with median salaries of at least $50,000 pay on average 14% less in Maine compared to the country overall, a Maine Sunday Telegram analysis found.
Of the 28 jobs and salaries the newspaper examined, 22 pay less in Maine, with lawyers seeing the largest discrepancy at 45% lower than the national median. Most of the median salaries that were higher in Maine, based on U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data for 2014, are in the healthcare field.
Pharmacists in Maine have a median salary of nearly 9% higher than across the nation, and the median salaries of physician assistants are about 4% higher in Maine.
