Sanford plant to close, lay off 225

GE Healthcare will shut down its plant in Sanford, which employs roughly 225 people, by the end of next year, according to the Associated Press.

GE Healthcare, based in a suburb of London, will shut down the former Whatman plant next November as part of a restructuring plan, according to Portland news station WCSH 6. GE Healthcare in April acquired Whatman, a global life sciences company. Employees at the Sanford plant manufacture medical testing devices.

The company says there may be opportunities for some workers to fill jobs at other facilities, including its plant in Westborough, Mass., the AP reported.
