Sappi electricians vote down contract

The union representing 59 electrical instrumentation workers at Sappi Fine Paper in Skowhegan has voted down a new employment contract, leaving open the possibility of further negotiations or a vote to strike.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the 74-member union representing Sappi's machinists has accepted its contract while the electricians' contract remains unresolved.

David Boudreau, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1768, told the paper that the union must notify the company within 10 days of the vote. After that notification, the union may hold a vote to strike.

Boudreau did not disclose the union vote tallies, nor detail the sticking points of the contract negotiations.

A strike vote for the union has not been scheduled.
