A Bangor area timber company owner has purchased the defunct Saunders Brothers dowel mill in Greenwood and plans to restart operations.
Steve LaFreniere, owner of Eastbrook Timber Corp. in West Enfield, bought the 26.6-acre mill complex in Oxford County at an auction yesterday for $450,000, according to the Sun Journal. He told the paper he plans to work with the governor's office to resume making wooden dowels at the 71,700-square-foot mill and hire workers. The mill, which the town valued at $1.36 million, closed in late May and left 55 workers unemployed. LaFreniere has bought four mills in as many months, and owns facilities in Bangor, Houlton, Kenduskeag and Old Town, according to the paper.
Bank of America foreclosed on the property in March after SB Acquisitions LLC failed to meet mortgage conditions. Saunders Brothers said a sale to Joseph Woodbury, owner of National Wood Products in Oxford, was pending, but that deal never materialized.
