Scam targets business information

A new scam is targeting Maine business owners, asking for corporate records and a $125 payment they are not required to make.

Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap said in a press release Wednesday that a company calling itself the "Corporate Records Service" is soliciting corporations to file information and the payment by a certain date in order to complete corporate meeting minutes on behalf of the organization.

The solicitations include citations of state law referring to corporate records and annual meetings, which Dunlap said can make the solicitations appear official.

They are not, Dunlap said, and Maine corporations are not required to file corporate minutes with the Secretary of State's Office.

Annual reports, however, are required to be filed on or before June 1 of each year, which Dunlap said can be done at the department's website.
