The decision has been made, and Maine's first Costco is opening in Scarborough at the Downs, bringing the company's membership warehouse concept to the growing Innovation District.
The Scarborough Planning Board approved Costco's plan to construct a 161,000 square- foot retail facility and accessory gasoline filling station, the town said in a press release Tuesday.
The town has approved larger, oversized parking spaces and taller lights in the parking lot. Costco has agreed to pay for traffic impact fees if the store's customers increase traffic flow.
The store is slated to open either late 2023 or early 2024. Scarborough town officials said site work would begin in the fall.
In July, Costco developers met with the Scarborough Planning Board to discuss the formal site plan review. Board members insisted that a turning lane be added to the plans for traffic control on Payne Road. In January, the board members rejected Costco's plan on the same site and wanted to see a different layout.
Costco Wholesale operates 838 big-box, membership only stores worldwide, 572 in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, 16 of which are located in New England and an annual revenue of $119 billion as of 2021.
