SACO — The owners of Nonesuch River Brewing, which has a brew pub in Scarborough, have agreed to open a restaurant on Saco Island as part of the proposed The Waters project.
The news is a “quantum leap,” for the project, city Director of Development and Planning Denise Clavette said in a news release from developer Bernie Saulnier.
The project went before the Saco Planning Board Tuesday night for a site walk and review, and was scheduled to go before the Saco River Corridor Commission Wednesday night.
“The larger project still needs permits from our planning board, and the Saco River Corridor Commission, but assuming that happens, this is spectacular news for the city of Saco,” Clavette said. “These folks already have a thriving success story under their belts, and in addition to the hotel that has already agreed to come to Saco Island, this catapults our city forward dramatically.”
Nonesuch River Brewing opened a brew pub at 201 Gorham Road in Scarborough last year.
Tim Boardman, one of three co-owners at Nonesuch River Brewing, said the group shares the developers enthusiasm for the project.
"After meeting the developer, we quickly shared his enthusiasm for the potential of this project,” Boardman said. "It is remarkable that this unique property has sat neglected and underutilized for so long. This will truly be a fantastic addition to the recent development in the Saco/Biddeford area."
Chef Jeff Gambardella, who has owned restaurants in San Francisco, would be the restaurant’s chef.
Besides the restaurant, the Waters would include 92 condominiums, 10,000 square feet of retail space, a small hotel and two small marinas.
