Sea Bags opened a new store in Camden’s shopping district — its third in Maine — just in time for the traditional start of the summer tourism season.
Located at 6 Main St., the new 1,300-square-foot store opened on May 26 and is the largest of 12 stores opened by the Portland-based Sea Bags, which designs, manufactures and sells products handmade from recycled sails
“We’ve had our sights set on opening a store in Camden for a number of years,” said Sea Bags CEO Don Oakes. “We held off until now in respect of our long-standing relationship with the Jane Alden shop, who was very successful in this space and decided to close up shop at the end of 2016. When we were contacted about the upcoming availability of the space, we jumped on the opportunity to bring a Sea Bags store to the midcoast.”
Founded in 1999, Sea Bags' home store is at 25 Custom House Wharf in Portland. Besides the new store just opened in Camden, its other Maine store is in Freeport.
The company is in an expansion mode, with the Camden store being the ninth new location to open in the past two years. Earlier this year, Sea Bags announced the opening of stores in Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., and Portsmouth, N.H.
Like all Sea Bags stores, the Camden store will operate a Sail Trade Program, where customers can trade in used sails in exchange for a Sea Bags product. Sails are evaluated by size and condition to determine the trade. Through this process, Sea Bags has reclaimed over 500 tons of sails since 2006. Last year alone, the company accepted 5,500 sails that would have otherwise gone to a landfill.
