Camp Sunshine, a nonprofit retreat in Casco for seriously ill children and their families, on Monday received its largest donation ever, a $1.1 million gift from Atlanta-based Tropical Smoothie Cafe LLC.

The funds will help sponsor attendance of 200 families at the 24-acre camp on Sebago Lake, and provide travel assistance there for over 300 families, according to a news release. The gift will also allow Camp Sunshine to expand its programs and outreach.

“It never ceases to amaze me how our franchisees, customers, and employees come together to contribute to Camp Sunshine in such a meaningful way,” said Tropical Smoothie Cafe CEO Charles Watson. “I’m proud that we can support Camp Sunshine’s mission.”

Tropical Smoothie Cafe is a nationwide chain of 775 casual healthy-food restaurants, including franchises in Biddeford and South Portland. The company has contributed to Camp Sunshine for over 10 years, and previous donations totaled $6.3 million, Tropical Smoothie said in an April news release.

Camp Sunshine, which has a 2019 budget of $3.8 million, provides year-round, no-charge recreation, respite and support for families and children with life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 1984, the camp has served more than 50,000 people from all 50 states and 27 countries.
