Sen. Richard Rosen, R-Bucksport, will take charge of a new state planning office following his appointment by Gov. Paul LePage, which was announced today.
The new governor's Office of Policy and Management became active in May of this year, replacing the executive branch arm of the State Planning Office, which was disbanded and reorganized under other state departments.
The law that created the new office — staffed now by Acting Director Peter Rogers and State Economist Amanda Rector — set out a goal for it to find $1 million in savings for the state in the next two budget years by Dec. 1.
LePage spokeswoman Adrienne Bennett told Mainebiz in October the office was then continuing to work toward its Dec. 1 deadline.
Rosen will take the helm of the new office on Dec. 6, according to a press release.
Staff at the office will include the state economist "and several other professional positions," according to the press release, and the office will report directly to the governor.
The office is tasked with budget formation and review across all agencies, facilitating coordination between government agencies, evaluating the effectiveness of economic incentive programs and tax policy, and delivering economic data.
On Wednesday, the state's top financial official reported the state government faces an immediate $37 million shortfall and $126.6 million revenue shortfall over the next two budget years.
Rosen, who completes his fourth term in the Maine Senate in December, also served three terms in the Maine House, starting in 1998.
Rosen was chairman of the Legislature's Appropriations and Financial Affairs Committee during the 125th Legislature and is married to Rep. Kimberly Rosen, R-Bucksport.
