Senate president in run for Blaine House

Senate President Elizabeth "Libby" Mitchell yesterday launched her campaign to run for governor as a Democrat, joining five other Democrats in the 2010 race for the Blaine House.

Mitchell has served nine terms in the Maine House and three in the Senate, and was the first woman in U.S. history to serve as both president of the Senate and Speaker of the House, according to the bio on her website. Mitchell practices law as an associate at the firm of Mitchell and Davis in Augusta.

So far, five other Democrats, four Republicans, two Maine Green Independent Party candidates and four enrolled candidates have filed paperwork for their gubernatorial bids, according to the Bangor Daily News. The most well-known Democrat already in the race is former Attorney General Steven Rowe.
