AT&T has no immediate plans to close a T-Mobile call center in Oakland following its acquisition of the wireless company, U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins said.
Last month, AT&T announced it would buy T-Mobile USA from Deutsche Telekom for $39 billion, leaving state officials concerned over the fate of the T-Mobile facility, which employs nearly 800. Snowe and Collins wrote a letter to AT&T Chairman and CEO Randall Stephenson urging him to "consider the impact of your proposed acquisition on the call center's employees," and asking him to keep local officials informed of decisions regarding the center's future. In a press release yesterday, the senators said Stephenson responded to their letter, saying "based on the information available to us currently, we have no plans to close the T-Mobile call center in Oakland following the merger closing." The company's plans are under review by regulators.
AT&T and T-Mobile plan to file paperwork on the merger with the Federal Communications Commission around April 21, and the review could take as long as a year, according to Reuters. The deal must also be reviewed by the Justice Department to ensure it does not violate antitrust law.
