Separate surprises close Portland, S. Portland businesses

Businesses in the Old Port and South Portland are back online after two unexpected and unrelated incidents forced closures.

A "serious rat infestation" discovered Thursday put a stop to business at The Porthole restaurant, the Comedy Connection and the Harbour's Edge banquet hall — all adjacent — after a two-year history of health code violations, according to the Portland Press Herald.

The three businesses reopened on Saturday with clearance from health inspector Michele Sturgeon.

In South Portland, a series of mysterious water main breaks caused the Portland Water District to investigate nine ruptures, one of which caused businesses near the shopping plaza at 740 Broadway to close for around a week, according to The Forecaster.

In total, nine water main breaks have been reported, including the Sept. 6 report that caused businesses in the area to shut their doors and, in some cases, make emergency repairs to reopen.

Portland Water District officials have only found explanations for three of the nine breaks, according to WCSH. PWD spokeswoman Michelle Clements told WCSH that the breaks could be a result of the age of the water mains and that the district is working on a long-term replacement plan.

A report released Monday found that the water district is not liable for any damage to the homes and businesses affected.
