Shaw Brothers lowest bidder for marine terminal expansion project
Shaw Brothers Construction of Gorham could be in line to work on the multimillion-dollar expansion for Portland's International Marine Terminal.
That's because the Maine Department of Transportation named Shaw Brothers the apparent low bidder after reviewing bids from four Maine construction companies.
The DOT announced on Wednesday that Shaw Brothers' bid came in at $8.57 million, about $900,000 less than the state's estimated construction cost. DOT spokesman Ted Talbot told Mainebiz it will take two to three weeks to review the bid before it officially awards the contract.
"This is an exciting and important step toward connecting Maine businesses to the world," DOT Commissioner David Bernhardt said in a prepared statement. "Governor Paul LePage and I have worked closely with the Maine Port Authority to bring Eimskip, the Icelandic steamship company, to this port that they now call home."
The marine terminal expansion, with a total project cost of approximately $18 million, is expected to begin construction next month and finish by the end of August 2015.
The project's other bids are from:
• Wyman & Simpson Inc. of Richmond for $8.87 million;
• CPM Constructors of Freeport for $9.98 million;
• and Sargent Corporation of Stillwater for $10.02 million.
