Shellfish closure expands Downeast

Maine Department of Marine Resources has issued a recall of mussels harvested between Sept. 10 and Sept. 14 in the closed area from Mount Desert Island to Gouldsboro due to blooms of a phytoplankton that can carry domoic acid, which is toxic to humans.
Maine Department of Marine Resources has expanded a ban on harvesting shellfish from Midcoast areas to the Downeast coast.
According to an Associated Press report published in the Bangor Daily News, the DMR closed a section of the Penobscot River north of Stockton Springs, a section of Cobscook Bay south of Eastport, and a precautionary section as far east as Calais.
According to a news release from the DMR, the agency has recalled 57,492 pounds of mussels, of 58,480 pounds ordered for recall in Frenchman’s Bay. All Maine shellfish dealers were notified Friday that mussels harvested between Sept. 10 and Sept. 14 in the closed area from Mount Desert Island to Gouldsboro were subject to the recall. Mussels were the only product impacted by the recall.
The closures to harvesting and the recalls are due to blooms of a phytoplankton that can carry domoic acid, which is toxic to humans.
