Shipyard, Allagash help Maine 'punch above its weight' in U.S. craft brewer rankings

Shipyard Brewing Co. and Allagash Brewing Co., both of Portland, still rank among the country’s top 50 brewers in a tally published Monday.

Shipyard comes in at No 29 and Allagash at No. 30 in the latest yearly top-50 list by the Brewers Association, a nonprofit trade group based in Boulder, Colo., that ranks brewers by 2018 sales volume.

D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc., of Pottsville, Pa, is No. 1, followed by Boston Beer Co. of the Bay State and Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. of Chico, Calif.

Maine’s Shipyard and Allagash are nearly neck and neck after Shipyard slipped two places, from 27th previously to 29th place for 2018, and Allagash moved up six spots, from 36th previously to 30th for 2018.

Asked why Maine has only two breweries on the list, Brewers Association chief economist Bart Watson told Mainebiz the better way to phrase the question would be, “How does a state that ranks 41st in population have two on the list?”

“Maine punches above its weight in most things beer, and having two on the list, (which not many states can claim) is part of that,” he said. “There’s a long history of great beer and breweries in Maine, and the two breweries on this list have a lot to do with building that scene and community.”
