Shipyard Brewing Co. has agreed to pay $300,000 to the city of Portland over sewer fees the brewery was never billed.
The Portland Press Herald reported Shipyard and the city concluded a four-month arbitration process Friday, reaching an agreement over charges related to a water line installed at the brewery in 1996. Shipyard was not billed for sewer fees on that line, which the newspaper reported had supplied 201 million gallons of water over 15 years.
An analysis by the paper and city officials estimated that the company was not billed for nearly $1.5 million in resulting sewer fees during that time, but bad record-keeping and the death of two city employees involved with the billing left the errors difficult to trace. An investigation by the city last year attributed the mistake to human error.
The paper reported that an audit resulting from discovery of the Shipyard error found another dozen commercial and industrial customers had not been billed for their sewer fees. The paper reported that city spokeswoman Nicole Clegg said city officials will meet over the coming weeks to address how to collect from other unbilled accounts "in a way that is fair and reflects [Friday's] decision."
