Shipyard housing owner faces EPA fines
Housing providers for the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery and a Navy base in Connecticut face more than $150,000 in fines from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for failing to tell families about possible lead-based paint hazards.
Northeast Housing LLC and Balfour Beatty Military Housing Management allegedly violated disclosure laws by not releasing to military renters available reports on the presence of lead paint in the units in Kittery and at the Naval Submarine Base New London in Groton, Conn., according to The Associated Press. The EPA complaint references 13 leases from 2008 to 2010 in which residents were told of the presence of lead-based paint but were not given a full list of reports. Ten renters in Portsmouth were not provided appropriate documents, but base spokesman Christopher Zendan said he’s not aware of any military families reporting lead poisoning-related conditions. The proposed fine is $153,070. Balfour Beatty also operated housing at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station.
Northeast, a joint venture between the Navy and Balfour Beatty Communities LLC, owns the housing. The company attributed the oversight to an administrative error. Balfour Beatty manages the more than 2,100 units at the two bases.
