Shuttered Old Port sandwich shop accused of wage theft

Former employees of Pockets, a 24/7 sandwich shop on Fore Street in Portland that closed abruptly in early September, are accusing their former boss of not paying them, the Bangor Daily News reported Tuesday morning.

Andrew Schmidt, a labor lawyer working with some of the former employees, told the newspaper that a wage and hour lawsuit would be unlikely to succeed. One former employees told the newspaper that there is about $12,000 owed to former employees in unpaid wages.

The owner Dennis Caris, didn’t respond to a request from the Bangor Daily News for comment.

The Southern Maine Workers’ Center, a nonprofit membership organization that works with low-income people in Maine, and Schmidt, said they spoke to the newspaper to publicize a story of what they said was an unusual case of wage theft in the city — hoping it would put pressure on Caris to pay.
