The group proposing a casino in Lewiston has gathered enough signatures to put the plan to voters on the November 2011 ballot.
Great Falls Recreation and Redevelopment LLC last week announced it had collected 75,000 signatures and delivered them to the Secretary of State's office for verification, according to the Sun Journal. The signatures were due Jan. 20, and at least 57,277 signatures need to be verified in order to get the proposal on the ballot this year. Once the signatures are verified, the proposal is sent to the Legislature for review. The ballot vote is only necessary should legislators opt not to pass a bill allowing the casino, according to the paper.
Investors involved in Great Falls include former city councilor Stavros Mendros and anesthesiologist Ron Chicoine. The casino would be located on eight acres of land currently occupied by Bates Mill No. 5, which is slated for demolition, and include 1,500 slot machines as well as table games, according the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. In June, Lewiston voters approved selling the land to the group for $150,000.
