Maine's three biggest ski resorts have come out in opposition to the proposed casino in western Maine, arguing that a casino sullies the state's image as a place for families to enjoy nature.
Sunday River, Sugarloaf and Saddleback announced their opposition Wednesday. In response, Pat LaMarche, spokeswoman for the casino proposal, said the ski resorts are worried that the casino would lure their workers away because it will offer higher wages, the Associated Press reported.
Meanwhile, the Olympia Group, the Las Vegas developer that wants to build the $184 million casino, issued a study Tuesday saying the casino would create 1,277 jobs during construction and employ 907 when complete. The study, by the Center for Policy Analysis at the University of Massachusetts, also said the casino would stimulate another 592 jobs through casino workers' spending, and give the state $69 million in gambling revenue. Olympia says the casino would pay its workers 68% more than the statewide average for Maine's hotel industry.
