Skowhegan company unveils Pats' official ice cream

Fans of the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium Thursday probably weren’t happy about the 29-31 loss, but they got a taste of a new ice cream honoring the football team and created by a Maine company.

Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream, a family-owned manufacturer based in Skowhegan, unveiled the Pats’ official ice cream before the final preseason game, at home in Foxborough, Mass., against the New York Giants.

The new Gifford’s flavor, Dough Your Job, is a mix of cookie dough, heavy fudge and chocolate caramel “footballs” embedded in vanilla ice cream, according to a news release late Thursday.

In July, Gifford’s told Mainebiz it had secured a five-year sponsorship with the Patriots and would provide the official ice cream of the six-time Super Bowl champions. But details about the new flavor were as closely guarded as, well, quarterback Tom Brady in the pass pocket.

The name of the new flavor refers to a phrase Brady and coach Bill Belichick use to encourage Pats players: Do your job.

“‘Do Your Job’ has become a beloved mantra for our franchise and fans and we are thrilled to see Gifford’s celebrate the phrase that has long been associated with our championship tradition,” said Murray Kohl, vice president of sales for Kraft Sports + Entertainment, the team’s owner.

“Gifford’s did their job by making this great new flavor and now it’s time for our fans to do their job and enjoy this new ice cream just in time for the 2019 season.”

Beginning today, Dough Your Job is available at the Gifford’s five family-owned ice cream stands in Maine, according to the release. The ice cream will also be available for purchase at Gillette, and will be introduced in grocery stores throughout New England after Labor Day.
