SMCC new owner of former base land

Southern Maine Community College has formally received 22 acres of land at the former Brunswick Naval Air Station for its midcoast campus.

The Maine Community College System yesterday finalized the transfer of the property, part of a total of $78 million worth of land and buildings turned over to the system, according to the Bangor Daily News. The Navy in July transferred two buildings to SMCC, and 100 students started classes there this fall. The additional three buildings transferred Monday will house a new composites technology program and the Maine Advanced Technology & Engineering Center, a pre-engineering program. The whole campus will serve up to 2,500 students, system President John Fitzsimmons said.

The Navy transferred the property for $1, and a $4.7 million bond approved in June 2010 will fund conversion of the buildings for educational use.
