SMCC President Ortiz to step down

James Ortiz announced Friday he will retire as president of Southern Maine Community College in South Portland at the end of July.

Ortiz, who has led the college since February 2002, is credited with guiding the school through its transition from a technical college to a community college and growing its enrollment from fewer than 3,000 students to more than 7,000, according to the Portland Press Herald. He has also been involved with establishing a new campus at the redeveloped Brunswick Naval Air Station in conjunction with the University of Maine. The Maine Advanced Technology & Engineering Center is scheduled to open there in September.

Ortiz, 69, told the paper he's not sure what he'll do after retiring from SMCC, but that he plans to take six months off to figure it out. A national search for Ortiz's replacement will begin immediately, and a new president is expected to be hired by June.
