Snowmobile trail groomers in the red

Groomers of snowmobile trails in the Moosehead Lake region say they're losing money this year because of rising fuel bills, among other costs, and that the money they get from the Department of Conservation no longer covers their bills.

A group of groomers met to air grievances for the first time Tuesday at the Rockwood public boat ramp on Moosehead Lake, the Bangor Daily News reported. Tom McCormick, president of the Moosehead Riders Snowmobile Club, said he gets $3,300 a year from DOC snowmobile registration fees, but that his group's fuel bill is already $3,500 this year, the paper reported.

Some attendees said the state could raise extra funds by asking snowmobilers to buy trail permits. A spokesperson for the DOC was not available for comment this morning.
