A $5.2 million project that repurposed the former National Guard armory in South Portland into a gas station and office building is scheduled for a soft opening on Feb. 10.
In December 2015, James Howard, president of Topsham-based Priority Real Estate Group, looked to redevelop the armory, which involved restoration of the front section to its original character and demolishing the drill hall on the backside.
The armory, at 682 Broadway, between Hanson and Armory streets, is reopening with the gas station and the upscale Rusty Lantern Market occupying the first floor and Riverview Martial Arts taking up the second floor. Priority Real Estate Group spokesperson Kerri L. Bickford told The Forecaster that the market and Irving gas station are owned and will be operated by John Koch, who has leased the property from Priority.
“We’re pleased they kept the facade, and people entering South Portland, especially those who have grown up here and are familiar will it, can still see this piece of history,” Kathy DiPhilippo, executive director of the South Portland Historical Society, told the paper. “The fact that they saved the exterior is pretty cool. At least we have some sort of a historic landmark.”
