The iconic Captain Lord Mansion in Kennebunkport has been listed for sale at $7.9 million.

Available for the first time in four decades, owners Bev Davis and Rick Litchfield have listed the property with Kimberly Swan of The Swan Agency Sotheby’s International Realty.

Captain Lord Mansion was purchased by Davis and Litchfield in 1978 and has become one of the most highly respected and lauded Bed & Breakfasts in New England, being the only AAA Four Diamond rated property in Kennebunkport, according to a news release announcing the sale.

Entering their 40th year as innkeepers, Davis and Litchfield have decided to retire from the proprietor aspect of hospitality management and plan to spend time with their two new grandchildren as well as travel more extensively.

“We will miss the many guests with whom we have developed lasting friendships over the years,” they said. “We look forward to handing the reins over to the next innkeepers, who we hope will treasure and guide the Mansion into the future.”

Built during War of 1812

Captain Lord Mansion has a distinguished history. When a British blockade during the War of 1812 ground the Kennebunkport shipping industry to a halt, successful shipbuilder and merchant Captain Nathaniel Lord commissioned his workers to construct a grand, three-story Federal mansion topped with a cupola.

The large rear extension was completed in 1898 and the property passed through seven generations of female Lord descendants before being sold, for the first time in its history, in 1972.

The mansion has been extensively restored and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Captain Lord Mansion has received numerous accolades under Davis and Litchfield’s stewardship. In addition to 37 consecutive years with an AAA Four Diamond rating, it’s been named as one of Conde Nast Traveler’s “Top 50 Small Hotels in the U.S.,” a “Best Hotel” by U.S. News & World Report, and an “Editor’s Pick” by Yankee magazine.
