South Portland looks at redeveloping pier
South Portland is looking at ways to improve the Portland State Pier to better accommodate commercial fishermen and expand their reach to include the fast-growing aquaculture market, The Forecaster reported.
The pier, in Ferry Village, has been owned by the city since the 19th century, when it was constructed for shipbuilding. The property now leases 15 slips to lobster and tuna fishermen from April to November. Revenue from those leases ranges from $20,000 to $25,000, on which the city breaks even, Joshua Reny, assistant city manager, has said.
He added that challenges include maintenance and security.
The city hired GEI Consultants of Portland last November to conduct a site assessment and feasibility analysis, and to provide a conceptual design.
A stakeholder meeting is scheduled for this evening at the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in Portland, according to the Forecaster.
