South Portland startup ElleVet Sciences elevates chief financial officer to CEO role

ElleVet Sciences, a South Portland animal health startup specializing in cannabis-based products, has promoted Haley Israelson to CEO.

Israelson, currently ElleVet’s chief financial officer, will begin her new role Jan. 1, 2025. Co-founder Christian Kjaer, now serving as chair and CEO, will remain a member of the ElleVet Sciences board of directors.

The board conducted a year-long search for the CEO role.

“Haley has a deep understanding of all aspects of the business and is a highly valued member of our team,” Kjaer said in a news release.

“I see no better candidate than Haley to execute the amazing opportunities on the horizon, and I look forward to continuing to support the company as a member of the board.”

Israelson joined ElleVet as head of finance in 2019 and has managed many functions besides finance, including e-commerce and operations, production, order fulfillment and supply chain.

“Central to ElleVet’s DNA is our science-first approach, our promise to provide outstanding customer experiences, and our commitment to always doing what is right,” said Israelson. “These core elements provide an impactful framework for all decision making and I look forward to continuing to live by, and lead with, these company values.”

Prior to joining ElleVet, Israelson was a finance and investment professional in venture capital and private equity. She worked with numerous high-growth startups, including Salt Holding Co., Alliance Consumer Growth and North Atlantic Capital.

She is a certified public accountant and earned her MBA and her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Husson University.

ElleVet Sciences is privately held and was founded in 2017 by Kjaer, a former senior executive at IDEXX Laboratories Inc. (Nasdaq: IDXX), and Amanda Howland, who has a background in public health.

The company claims it's the only producer of cannabidiol (CBD) pet products for dogs and cats that have been proven to work in clinical trials. ElleVet says it has participated in over 40 clinical studies and R&D projects, and will unveil recent advancements in feline and equine health in early 2025.

ElleVet sells directly to veterinarians and consumers via a website.
