The city of South Portland, profiled in Mainebiz feature earlier this year for its retail-development 'mojo,' is touted in a new Fortune magazine livability list published on Wednesday.
Profiled as the best place for families to live in all of New England, the 25,500-population city across the Casco Bay Bridge from Portland was listed as the 13th best in the United States.
Released today, the magazine's "25 Best Places to Live for Families" ranking considers areas in the country where multigenerational families are most likely to thrive. The ranking focuses on best places to live for the “sandwich generation,” or nearly 50% of Americans raising kids under 18 while also caring for aging parents.
Researchers compiled the list after vetting nearly 2,000 cities, towns, suburbs, so-called exurbs, villages, and townships with 25,000 to 750,000 residents each across all 50 states and collected and analyzed data across five categories: education, aging resources, general wellness, financial health, and livability.
South Portland was one of two New England cities on the list, alongside Brookline, Mass., which was ranked No. 16.
“South Portland’s spot on the Fortune 25 Best Places to Live for Families is well deserved,” said South Portland's city manager, Scott Morelli. “We’re proud of our programs and resources that support families with caregiving responsibilities, and we’re thrilled to be recognized as one of the top cities in the country for families to live.”
An interactive Fortune magazine map accompanying the ranking shows the median home price in South Portland of $377,376, and a median household income of $78,697. Researchers note that many Americans took the opportunity to move when remote work exploded during the pandemic, including to places within driving distance to major cities.
