A scholar in the business of sports has been named dean of the University of Maine Graduate School of Business, effective July 1.
Norm O’Reilly, a professor and former assistant dean at the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada, has expertise in a range of business topics, including analytics, marketing, sponsorship, sports finance and management education.
He will step in for Executive Dean Faye Gilbert, who has served as interim dean of the UMaine school since the departure of J. Michael Weber one year ago. Weber was hired in July 2018 and now holds a similar position at Florida Southern College.
The UMaine Graduate School of Business offers an MBA, called the “MaineMBA,” in Orono, Portland and online. The MaineMBA is the only graduate business program in Maine accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
The school has seen a steady rise in its rankings among the country's best online MBA programs. According to an annual evaluation by U.S. News & World Report, the online MaineMBA ranked No. 131 in 2018, No. 90 in 2019, and No. 47 in 2020. In this year's ranking, the UMaine program was No. 81 among 295 that were graded.
Last month, the MaineMBA was ranked No. 54 nationally by Fortune magazine in a report on the best online MBA programs.
“The MaineMBA is on a terrific trajectory and is poised for continued success and growth,” O’Reilly said in a news release. “I look forward to working with all of our partners at the University of Maine Graduate & Professional Center, notably the Maine Law School and the University of Southern Maine, to continue the MBA’s rise. It is a very exciting time to join Maine and the Maine Business School, an opportunity with considerable entrepreneurial potential.”
In 2018, O’Reilly founded the International Institute for Sport Business & Leadership, a global research center and think tank at the University of Guelph. As a professor and CPA, he teaches courses in sport management and in accounting, and has authored or co-authored 16 books.
O’Reilly was an assistant dean of executive programs in Guelph’s Gordon S. Lang School of Business & Economics for two years. He also is a partner consultant in the T1 Agency, a Toronto-based branding firm.
From 2014-18, O’Reilly was a professor and chair of the Department of Sports Administration at Ohio University. He also has taught at the University of Ottawa, Syracuse University, Stanford University, Laurentian University, Ryerson University, Athabasca University, Bayreuth University and the Russian International Olympic University.
