Maine’s Joint Standing Committee on Labor, Commerce, Research and Economic Development will hold a public hearing in Augusta on March 16 to review and vote on Gov. Paul LePage’s nominee to head the Maine Technology Institute, Brian Whitney.
Whitney, who has been MTI’s acting head since August 2014, also serves as director of Business Development & Innovation at the Maine Department of Economic & Community Development. He has run MTI since former President Robert Martin was abruptly fired by the governor in August 2014.
The hearing is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. in the Cross Building.
MTI said its president is the only officer in the public/private organization who is on the state payroll.
In an email to Mainebiz, Whitney said the LCRED is the first to consider the nomination. “Once that process is complete, the full Senate votes on the nomination,” he wrote. “Those two steps will likely conclude next week.”
Added Whitney, ”The final step in this process requires the Maine Technology Institute Board of Directors to affirm the nominee. The board next meets in April and will likely complete the process at that time.”
Whitney was formerly director of Outreach and Economic Development for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, and joined DECD as its director of Business Development & Innovation in October 2012.
