Starch plant workers qualify for assistance

Workers at an Island Falls starch production company that closed last summer are now eligible for federal assistance.

The 37 workers at National Starch and Chemical Co., once the Aroostook County town's largest employer, have qualified for Trade Adjustment Assistance, the Bangor Daily News reported. The Department of Labor also amended its initial TAA certification to include workers leased from Page Employment who worked at the plant.

Officials from the New Jersey-based company announced last June that the plant would close as part of streamlining efforts. The plant made food-grade starch for processed foods, industrial products and processes including papermaking, the paper reported.

Trade Adjustment Assistance provides workers who have lost their jobs due to foreign competition with re-employment services and benefits.
