State christens new, $10.3M Rockland ferry

Transportation officials today will christen a new ferry, marking the first time in 19 years the state ferry service has added a new vessel to its fleet.

The $10.3 million ferry is named the Capt. E. Rank Thompson after a longtime Vinalhaven ferry skipper, who died in 2003, according to The Free Press. The Maine State Ferry Service was scheduled to christen it today at 10 a.m. at the Rockland Ferry Terminal. It can transport up to 250 passengers and 22 vehicles, and will run between Rockland and Vinalhaven.

Members of Thompson's family as well as legislators, town officials, DOT representatives and members of Maine's congressional delegation were expected to attend the christening.
